Savanna

During my Intro Art class at the College of St. Scholastica we were given 30 minutes to draw anyone who came to mind, I did a sketch of my sister-Savanna. In the background I did a scene from here favorite place in the world, Cape Cod, along with a sailboat because she loves them. In the front part of the drawing I did a feather pen with an ink splotch because my sister is an amazing writer. In front of her hands you will see that I placed a notebook, I did it to look like it should be a bouquet for her wedding, since writing is the love of her life.

Merry Christmas!!

For Christmas this year I decided to you my employee discount at Michaels to get myself some art supplies and make a few of my gifts. I did three different canvas multi-media pieces.

The first one I made was for my sister. Her favorite place in the entire world is Cape Cod; she was given the opportunity to go there for a week a couple of years ago. While she was there, our uncle told Savanna that she needed to memorize a quote, to this day it is her favorite quote by Eudora Welty. I brought these different experiences together to make this for her.

I also made two others for two girls I babysit. For Sadie I made a pretty glitter rainbow and had sparkly butterflies going up the side.

For Taylor I was inspired by Van Gogh’s flowers, I did a splotchy background with yellows, reds, and oranges. Then I shattered a terracotta flower pot and used some of the pieces to recreate a flower pot along the bottom edge, and then I painted in a variety of different flowers.

Finally, I made one for my friend Katie at the College of St. Scholastica. I knew exactly what I wanted to do for her, one day she was flipping through my sketch book and found a painting of a flower I had done that was very brightly colored. So, this is what I made for her. On top of the layers of paint in the flower I used colored pencil to help bring out more of the color in the petals.

60's Done Right

During my independent art class I was inspired by someone’s “beautiful” graffiti on the table… it was of a pot leaf. So, I started searching for images, designs, and colors to take a modern twist on a 60’s sense of “peace and love”. I had a lot of fun making this since I had so much freedom in the placement of the different images and ideas. I know this is one of Mr. Quisling favorites that I have done (: and I definitely agree with him because I love this!

Young, Wild & Free

Summer after graduation I started working on a new multi-media collection. I knew I wanted it to be a collection with three elements, because I had three spare canvases in my room. One night I just started painting. I wanted each of the paintings to have a sense of life. I did this my creating a “flower” shaped background with bright colors in acrylic.

On the first painting I finished I added a three dimensional flower which was made from colored paper and colored pencil, I also added sequences that were left over from a dress, and I added a little glitter to accent the painted background.

Next I looked around my room as I was packing to leave for college. I did not need to bring a Peacock feather with me and its height match perfectly with my canvas. I then smashed a mirror that I attached to broken pieces along the opposite edge. Then just to add another unique aspect I took a purple and gold spray paint and used it along the bottom edge.

Finally, I used a broken Mardi Gras necklace and placed the clear beads along the contours of the painting, and I accented the acrylic paint with some gold glitter I had stumbled upon.

I had a lot of fun working on this collection and finding the different items that would come into play.

Coloring Book Creations

During my senior year I was able to be in Independent art, I did a handful of art pieces didn’t really fit the style of art I wanted to do. So, I picked a couple different pictures from up at my cabin and created multi-media paintings, with tempera paint and colored pencil.

The first is a sunrise overlooking the meadow from the deck of my cabin.

Second is a day time image from the hill at my Great Grandma’s overlooking the pond.

Finally, is a sunset from the end of my Grandparents dock.

My Break Downs

When I was in high school I was able to take a print making course, to start off with we did basic black and white break down on paper. My drawing I decided to do was of the “Creation” painting done by Michelangelo.

After learning the concepts of negative and positive space we got to work with lenolyum blocks, my print was based on a “Converse” add (my favorite brand of shoes). I have a copy of “I Gotta Feelin’” in my dorm, and my best friend Amanda has a copy in her room.

I also did a block print of a turtle… I have a long history with turtle prints… So I thought I might as well do an art piece that was legal.

Next we got to do basic silk screen prints. I made a political statement with mine. I chose an image of the First Lady flexing with her quote “I have the Right to Bare Arms”.

Finally, we got to make a multi layered silk screen art piece. I chose to do a scene with the northern lights. This was my favorite from this art course and I made about 10 copies, which were given to various family members and friends, I kept my favorite ones. I got some very good tips on how to do the different layers from Mr. Quisling.

You Are My Sunshine

Over the course of my life I have had the opportunity to travel to all of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s homes. I was able to do this through Girl Scout Camp; it was a lot of fun. When I was down in Mansfield Missouri our group got to do a cultural activity with making clay wall hangings. I decided to make a Sun to hang on the wall at my cabin.
